For many entrepreneurs, artificial intelligence (AI) is making it easier to start a business.
A 2026 Shopify survey found that 67% of founders say entrepreneurship is more accessible because of AI tools. Specifically, surveyed founders say AI lets them do things they couldn’t have done otherwise and cuts the time and effort required to run their companies.
Ahead, learn how to start a business using AI and how to use Shopify native AI tools and connect third-party AI tools to your store, with insights from successful ecommerce entrepreneurs and an AI expert.
Start a business using AI in 6 steps
- Generate and refine ideas using AI
- Conduct market research with AI
- Design a product with AI
- Brand your business with AI
- Start selling with AI
- Market your business using AI
Learn how to start a business using AI with this step-by-step guide:
1. Generate and refine ideas using AI
Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Gemini can help you come up with business ideas and refine them into a well-scoped venture.
You’ll enter prompts, and the LLM will give you potential concepts for a company. “I can type in a stream-of-consciousness idea and have it produce enough of a workable base to go into the cycle of refinement or iteration,” says Alex Pilon, a senior developer at Shopify and AI advocate.
That said, you can get more refined results by sharing specialized knowledge with the LLM. “If you understand a problem or the space of some kind of discipline, whether it's technology or product space or something like that, you can have a richer conversation,” says Alex.
Here are a few tips for honing your AI prompts:
- Be specific. If you have a product category or business model in mind, tell the AI. Or, if you know the customer problem you want to solve, share that.
- Include examples. Tell the LLM if there are businesses you want yours to be similar to and what you like about them.
- Use negatives. Tell the AI what you don’t want your business to be.
Tweak your prompts as you go and ask follow-up questions until you brainstorm a business idea that sparks your enthusiasm. Then, ask the AI for details on specific products and services to sell.
Follow the same prompt guidelines you used to find a business idea, and edit and clarify your requests until you land on a product or service you’re happy with.
2. Conduct market research with AI
Market research is the process of gathering and analyzing information about your target audience and competitors. Use AI market research tools to identify market trends, evaluate competitor strategies, forecast demand for your product, conduct virtual focus groups, and more.
“You give [the AI tool] your business [idea], you give it some competitor businesses, and you say, ‘These are the categories in the space....What can you tell me?’” says Andrew Faris, ecommerce expert and founder of boutique agency AJF Growth, on Shopify Masters.
“Within five minutes, it'll give you a 10-page report about who your most likely customers are, who tends to shop in this category, and how you're priced compared to your competitors.”
Just make sure you validate the information the AI tool is providing, as one of the dangers of AI is hallucinations—an incorrect or fabricated response that the AI presents as true. Ask for citations and read through source material to verify accuracy of information.
Keep in mind, too, that AI might miss things like cultural context. You might be able to catch nuances about your target market or competitors that only a human with life experience could understand.
3. Design a product with AI
Once you’ve decided on a product to sell, you can design your product using AI. Tools like Canva Magic Design, Midjourney, and Dall-E can create visual representations of your product based on prompts.
Sean Frank, CEO of accessories brand Ridge, uses AI to create product renderings. “AI really helps the design and mockup phase—going from a product idea to an actual render to getting into designs has been awesome,” says Sean on Shopify Masters.
He also uses AI to find new product variants. “It helps us unlock colors we should try or different features we can add,” he says.
But Sean stops short of asking AI to come up with completely new products. Alex explains that ultimately, you’re the one responsible for safeguarding your vision.
“You’re still the creator, you're still the person pushing this idea with this vision,” says Alex. “And you can use these tools to make your vision more clear to other people.”
4. Brand your business with AI
When you build a brand, you establish core elements of your company’s visual identity and brand personality. These include brand values, brand voice, color palettes and fonts, and your name and logo.
Shopify’s AI business name generator is one place to start. You tell the tool about your business, industry, and brand personality, and the AI gives you a selection of potential brand names. After you pick one, check to see if your business name is already taken, then make sure it’s also free as a domain and as a handle on social media platforms.
You can also experiment with Shopify’s AI logo maker. Input your brand name, and the tool displays logo options. Customize the logos by prompting the AI to add or change certain elements.
5. Start selling with AI
Shopify’s 2026 survey found that entrepreneurs credit technology most with helping them in two business areas: Finding and reaching customers and getting set up to sell. There are a host of AI tools that can help you on these fronts.
AI website builders help you create a professional, user-friendly online store in minutes. With Shopify’s free AI store builder, for example, enter a few words that describe your business, and the AI provides personalized store designs.
Then, use the built-in AI assistant Shopify Sidekick to edit your store’s layout. Tell Sidekick what you’d like to do, and the tool completes the task itself or tells you how to do it. Shopify Magic can help you populate your store with product descriptions, headers, and other on-page copy.
Another option is using external AI tools to set up your shop. Shopify integrates with AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, which you can use to do things like update product prices and pull sales reports. You can also leverage these platforms to change the look of your store.
“If you’re a Shopify merchant, you can go in and redesign your site for Valentine’s Day and then the next day revert it,” Alex says. “It costs you a couple dollars of tokens instead of a thousand-dollar design agency fee and all this time and back and forth and change requests.”
6. Market your business using AI
As you start marketing your business, you’ll need to start creating content for your various marketing channels like email, social media, and blog. Plenty of AI marketing tools exist to help you with content creation, which is often expensive and time-consuming.
Just remember that you’re responsible for the accuracy of the content you generate with AI. Review everything carefully to ensure it represents your products, brand, or store policies accurately.
Once you have a couple of marketing assets, you can use AI to turn those brand assets into more assets for other platforms.
For example, Muammar Reed, cofounder of children’s book fair company MiJa Books, uses an LLM to turn a single video into cross-channel content. “With AI, there’s no excuse for you not to be able to turn one piece of content into four or five other posts on different platforms,” Muammar says on Shopify Masters.
Muammar takes the captions from his videos, feeds them into an LLM like ChatGPT or Claude, then has the AI write newsletters based on his input. “It’s your authentic voice because it’s trained off of your video and your content, so it’s going to sound like you,” Muammar says. He also uses AI to turn videos into carousel posts and create new ads that are similar to high-performing ones.
Sean from Ridge uses AI to generate new materials based on their most successful content pieces and ads in their marketing mix. “You put in all of your favorite copy you've ever written, all of your best performing emails, all of the data you have on that,” Sean says on Shopify Masters. When Ridge has a new campaign, Sean outlines it for Claude and has the tool write new copy.
You can also use AI to plan and automate your ecommerce marketing strategy. With Shopify Autopilot, for example, you connect marketing channels like Meta Ads and Microsoft Advertising, set a monthly budget, and establish rules for how much supervision you want to have over the AI’s decisions.
Then Autopilot creates campaigns and chooses placements that optimize your budget. It improves over time as it learns which segments of your target audience engage, which channels convert, and which individual ads connect with consumers.
Expert tips for using AI to start your business
To help you make the most of every AI business opportunity, Alex shares his expert tips:
Build your AI intuition
Before diving headfirst into implementing AI in your business, try to understand how AI works and what tasks it’s best suited for. “Have an understanding of how an LLM actually functions and, therefore, what it is inherently good at,” Alex says.
Then spend some time getting familiar with AI technology and honing your technical skills. “If I was starting with AI for the first time, I would say interact with it as a ‘thought partner.’ Just ask it some questions about something, about anything you're doing,” says Alex. He recommends taking the AI’s output “with a grain of salt” as you get the hang of it.
“You'll start to build up an instinct of what it is good at or how to phrase things to get the kind of answer you're looking for,” says Alex. “Then eventually start asking it, ‘What would I do?’ to get it to give you advice.”
Alex recommends using chat.openai.com to get started: It’s free and you don’t need to create an account to use it.
Be realistic about AI’s limitations
Although AI can be a powerful partner, it lacks the critical eye and contextual awareness humans have. That’s why human intelligence is still essential, regardless of how strong the AI output seems.
“AI has human-like reasoning and decision-making skills, but it’s important to remember that at its core it is still an algorithm. It can produce reasoning and decisions that look perfectly reasonable on the surface yet are actually wrong in a specific context,” says Alex.
“You’re still the tastemaker,” Alex says. “AI is not a substitute for taste.”
Use AI to bridge gaps in your skillset
“AI can give anyone of any skill level a springboard into an area outside of their expertise,” Alex says.
He likes using AI to explore subject areas he doesn’t know much about. He uses AI as an entrypoint, then uses his own instincts to gain familiarity with the topic at hand.
“Then I can very rapidly go from ‘I don't really know anything about this’ to ‘I now understand how this works and I can see a path where I can achieve what I'm looking to do in this area,’” says Alex. “Whereas before that might have taken me a few days to do or more, now it’s 15 minutes of exploration.”
If you’ve never done marketing work before, for example, you can use AI to learn the basics; if you're starting with no experience in bookkeeping, AI can teach you the fundamentals.
