Website promotion is the practice of attracting visitors to a website through digital and traditional marketing channels.
Marketing ranked as the top first-year challenge in the Shopify Survey of Store Owners, Q4 2025, cited by 37% of respondents.*
This guide covers digital and traditional marketing strategies to promote your website. It’s for store owners who’ve launched an online store and want more shoppers to find it.
11 ways to promote your website
Here are 11 digital and traditional marketing methods for promoting your website, organized into four groups:
The first two promotion steps in the Shopify Help Center’s new store checklist are search tasks: adding homepage metadata and then verifying your site with Google and submitting a sitemap.
The same checklist says search engine indexing isn’t instant. Google and other search engines take 48 to 72 hours to index new pages, and not every page is guaranteed to be indexed.
For a newly launched store, complete those two search tasks first, then work through the search and content group.
Search and content promotion
Search and content promotion covers helping search engines find and rank your website’s pages, and publishing content that answers what your target audience searches for.
1. Optimize your site for search
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving your website’s visibility in search engine results.
SEO helps you attract organic traffic (visitors from unpaid search listings), by matching your store to search engine requirements and what searchers expect.
The same overview groups SEO into three types:
On-page SEO
On-page SEO involves matching content to search intent, which is what your target audience is trying to accomplish with a search.
It also includes writing image alt text and file names, linking between related pages, and placing relevant keywords in page content and metadata.
In your Shopify admin, head to Sales channels > Online Store > Preferences to edit your homepage’s title and meta description. You can also edit the title tag, meta description, and URL in the Search engine listing section for products, collections, pages, and blog posts.
Off-page SEO
Off-page SEO involves the external factors search engines evaluate, including backlinks (links to your site from other websites) and mentions of your brand across the web. Off-page tactics include guest blogging, public relations, social media posting, and industry directory listings.
Domain Authority (DA) is a third-party score from Moz, an SEO software company, that predicts how likely a website is to rank, based primarily on the quality and quantity of links pointing to it.
Google doesn’t use DA as a ranking factor, and Google’s guidance on third-party SEO tools says those tools don’t have access to its internal ranking data.
Links in social media posts are user-generated content. Google’s documentation on qualifying outbound links recommends marking user-generated links with rel="ugc", and says links marked with rel="ugc" or rel="nofollow" generally won’t be followed.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO covers how search engines crawl and index your site: page speed, site structure, sitemaps, and structured data.
Built into every Shopify store
These elements come standard:
- Sitemap. Each store automatically generates a sitemap.xml file that lists its pages for search engines.
- Crawler rules. A robots.txt file, also generated automatically, tells crawlers which pages they can visit.
- Canonical tags. Automatically added canonical tags keep duplicate content out of search results.
- Product schema. Themes include product schema markup, which enables rich snippets in search results.
Title tags, meta descriptions, and URLs are editable for products, collections, pages, and blog posts, in each one’s Search engine listing section of your Shopify admin.
Product rich results and Google Shopping
Google’s documentation on product structured data says this markup makes product pages eligible to show price, availability, review ratings, and shipping details in Google Search results. Google calls these product rich results.
The Google & YouTube sales channel syncs your products with Google Merchant Center. Synced products from eligible stores selling in the US are eligible to appear in Google Shopping tab listings for free.
Core Web Vitals
Google’s Core Web Vitals documentation says these metrics measure real-world loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability, and that good scores align with what Google’s core ranking systems seek to reward.
Check your store’s scores two ways:
- The performance metric summary, which you can find at the top of the page above the theme options when you navigate to Online Store (Sales channels > Online Store)
- The web performance reports, found under Analytics > Reports, broken down by page and over time
AI search and shopping platforms
In a Pew Research Center analysis of March 2025 browsing data, Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared.
According to the Shopify Help Center’s product guidance for AI platforms, products that meet Shopify Catalog requirements are included by default. AI platforms and shopping sites consider fields such as title, description, images, and barcode.
2. Find keywords and audit your site with free tools
Keyword research tools take a starting term, called a seed keyword, and return related search terms with estimates of how often people search for each one. Use these terms to plan new pages or to update existing ones.
Starting with low-volume, low-difficulty keywords is a good place for newer brands to begin, then move to more competitive terms as the site gains rankings and credibility.
Google Keyword Planner suggests keywords related to your products, services, or website and estimates how many searches each keyword gets per month.
Google describes Keyword Planner as a free resource, but access requires a Google Ads account with account setup completed, including billing information. To find ideas, open Keyword Planner from the Tools menu in Google Ads and select Discover new keywords.
The Performance report in Google Search Console shows which search queries bring traffic to your site, along with the clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position for each query and page. It also identifies the pages with the highest and lowest click-through rates from Google Search results.
3. Start a blog
Content marketing is the practice of publishing free resources, such as articles and guides, for your target audience. A store blog is one format for it.
Plan posts around topics your customers search for. Examples include a guide to house-training a new puppy for a pet supply store, or tips on indoor allergies for a store selling organic cleaning products. For seasonal topics, such as a holiday gift swap guide from a gift wrap store, use Keyword Planner to see how searches for a term have changed over time.
Every Shopify online store comes with a built-in blogging engine. From Content > Blog posts in your Shopify admin, you can add posts with images, links, tables, and embedded video, organize them with tags, and publish immediately or schedule a date.
4. Offer educational content
Educational content includes how-to articles, white papers (in-depth reports on a single topic), and online courses that teach subjects related to what you sell. Content built on informational keywords, the terms people search when they want to learn something, reaches shoppers who are still in the research phase.
An example is a series of articles on training for different race distances, published by a store selling wearable fitness trackers for endurance athletes, and written for people new to endurance sports.
Social, community, and email
Social, community, and email promotion covers the channels outside search engines where you share content and talk with people including social media platforms, online communities and forums, and email newsletters.
5. Use social content
Among US adults, 84% say they ever use YouTube, and 71% use Facebook, while 50% use Instagram. Smaller shares use TikTok (37%) and WhatsApp (32%), according to a 2025 Pew Research Center survey.
Use also varies by age. According to the same study, 8 in 10 adults ages 18 to 29 said they use Instagram, compared with 19% of adults 65 and older. Compare these figures with the age range of your customers when choosing where to post.
If you’re a Shopify store owner, the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel syncs your products to a catalog on Facebook and Instagram. You can then sell through Facebook Shop on your business’s Facebook Page and through Instagram Shopping on your Instagram profile.
The channel is free to use with all Shopify plans, subject to store eligibility. Its Meta Marketing features include setting up Meta Pixel, a tracking code that records the actions visitors take on your store.
The TikTok Shop sales channel syncs your products to TikTok. You can sell through LIVE shopping, shoppable in-feed videos, and a product showcase on your TikTok profile, then fulfill orders from your Shopify admin. The Shopify Help Center’s new store checklist notes that TikTok is available only in select countries.
6. Join online communities and forums
Online communities include Reddit, which hosts topic-based forums called subreddits; Quora, a question-and-answer site; and niche Facebook groups built around shared interests. In a 2025 Pew Research Center survey, 26% of US adults said they use Reddit.
A separate Pew analysis of Google searches found that Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit were the most frequently cited sources in both Google AI summaries and standard search results. Together, those three accounted for 15% of the sources listed in AI summaries.
Reddit’s spam policy asks users to post authentic content into communities where they have a personal interest. It also says that if your contributions consist primarily of links to a business you run, you should be thoughtful about how often you post, or consider Reddit’s advertising platform instead. Moderators of each subreddit decide what counts as spam in their community, so read a subreddit’s rules before posting.
Quora’s answer policies require answers to respond to the question asked and to disclose relevant affiliations in the answer or the writer’s credentials. Affiliate links aren’t allowed on Quora, and neither is self-promotion that isn’t part of a direct, helpful response to the question.
Before posting in a Facebook group, read its rules and check whether it limits promotional posts to specific threads or days. On all three platforms, answer the question asked, say that you own the store when you mention your products, and link to your site only when the link answers the question.
7. Start an email marketing newsletter
An email newsletter is a recurring email sent to people who’ve opted in to hear from your store. Collect sign-ups with Shopify Forms, a free app that adds pop-up or inline sign-up forms to your online store.
Each form can include a new or existing discount as a sign-up incentive and tag subscribers into customer segments. Shoppers can also subscribe through a marketing checkbox at checkout or sign-in, which you turn on in the Marketing opt-in section of Settings > Checkout.
Shopify Messaging sends email, SMS, and WhatsApp campaigns and marketing automations from your Shopify admin. Stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans get 10,000 free emails each month, with additional emails priced from $1 per 1,000.
Use campaigns to share new products, promotions, and updates. For example, sending new subscribers a welcome email with a discount code and a link to your store.
The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide lists requirements for commercial email in the US, including:
- Accurate “From,” “To,” and “Reply-To” information
- Subject lines that reflect the message’s content
- A clear disclosure that the message is an ad
- Your valid physical postal address
- A clear way to opt out, with requests honored within 10 business days
Shopify Messaging sends only to customers who’ve accepted email marketing. It removes subscribers who click Unsubscribe or mark an email as spam. Buying email lists violates the Shopify Terms of Service.
If you offer a discount or other benefit for forwarding your emails, the FTC says you may be responsible for CAN-SPAM compliance on the forwarded messages.
Rules differ outside the US, and the Shopify Help Center notes that some countries require double opt-in, where subscribers confirm by clicking a link in an email.
Listings, outreach, and events
Listings, outreach, and events promotion cover ways to reach people through other websites and in person: business directory listings, links and referral traffic (visitors who arrive from links on other sites), and networking at events.
8. Join business directories
Business directories list a business’s name, contact details, and website. Google Business Profile is Google’s free listing for businesses on Search and Maps. To qualify, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. Google lists online-only businesses, and businesses whose address is a PO box or remote mailbox, as ineligible.
If your store meets these requirements, create a Business Profile:
- Go to business.google.com/add.
- Click the blue Add your business to Google text.
- Enter your business details as prompted, including your phone number and website.
- Select a verification option and follow the on-screen steps.
If an unverified profile for your store already exists, open Google Maps, search for your store, and select Claim this business instead.
Online-only stores can list products on Google through Google Merchant Center instead.
Shopify’s Google & YouTube sales channel syncs the products available to your online store with Google Merchant Center. For eligible stores selling in the US, synced products are eligible to appear in Google Shopping tab listings for free.
Bing Places for Business is a free directory for Bing search and Bing Maps. If you already have a Google Business Profile, select Import from Google Business Profile to copy your details instead of entering them manually.
9. Earn links and referral traffic from other sites
Editorially earned links are links that other sites add because they chose to cite, review, or recommend your store, not because you paid or traded for them.
You could reach out to journalists, writers, and business owners with newsworthy updates, such as product launches or events, and create content relevant to your products for other sites to link to. Guest posting means writing articles for another site’s blog, where they reach that site’s readers.
Google’s spam policies define link spam as creating links primarily to manipulate search rankings. The policies’ examples include:
- Exchanging goods, services, or money for links
- Excessive link exchanges, which exploit cross-linking with partner pages
- Links with keyword-optimized anchor text in guest posts
- Using automated programs to create links to your site
The same page says sites that violate these policies may rank lower or not appear in results at all.
Google’s policies allow paid and sponsored links as long as they’re marked with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". If you pay for a placement or send a product for review, ask the publisher to mark the link with rel="sponsored". Don’t make a link a condition of a guest post unless the site owner is free to mark it with rel="nofollow". Links with either attribute still send referral traffic when readers click them.
Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google. It warns readers to beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google.
10. Network at events
Trade shows and community events let you meet potential customers and other professionals in person. Bring printed materials or branded giveaways with a QR code that links to your store. Choose items that relate to what you sell, such as branded umbrellas at a Fourth of July parade or foam footballs at a local game.
Hosting your own event lets you plan it around your customers’ interests, like a community dog show hosted by a store that sells organic pet treats.
To measure visits from each event, give it its own QR code or campaign link. Shopify’s Shopcodes app creates QR codes that link to a product page or to checkout with the product in the cart, with an optional discount code, and reports scans and conversions for each code.
For QR codes that link to other pages, add Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) parameters to the URL. These are tags that identify the campaign a visit came from, such as a utm_campaign value named after the event. Shopify counts traffic with utm_campaign parameters toward marketing attribution. Review the results on the Growth page or in the Performance by UTM campaign report under Analytics.
Paid promotion
Paid promotion covers advertising you pay for, such as search ads, social media ads, and sponsored placements, where a platform or publisher shows your content in exchange for payment.
11. Pay for promotion
Paid options include social media ads, search ads through Google Ads, and ad space bought directly from websites or print publications.
From the Google & YouTube sales channel in your Shopify admin, you access Google Merchant Center to create Performance Max campaigns. These campaigns run ads across Google channels, including YouTube, Google Search, Gmail, and Google Maps.
Influencer marketing means paying creators, or sending them free products, to promote your products to their audiences. Shopify Collabs lets you invite creators, send gifts, and track the sales, orders, visits, and conversion rate for each creator.
Creators earn affiliate commission when their audience buys through their affiliate link or discount code. Commissions are paid automatically through your Shopify bill, with a 2.9% processing fee on each payment. Ask creators to mark links in gifted or paid posts with rel="sponsored", as Google’s spam policies require.
The FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers says influencers must disclose any financial, employment, personal, or family relationship with a brand, including receiving free or discounted products.
Share these disclosure practices from the guide with the creators you work with:
- Place the disclosure with the endorsement itself, not only on a profile page, at the end of a post, or behind a “more” link
- Use clear terms such as “ad,” “advertisement,” or “sponsored,” not “sp,” “spon,” or “collab”
- Include the disclosure in the video itself, not only in the video description
- Repeat the disclosure periodically during live streams
Track what works
Shopify’s acquisition reports show how visitors reach your store. They include Sessions by referrer, which shows whether visitors arrive directly, from search, or through a referral, along with Sessions by location and Sessions over time.
These reports count visits only, not sales. To see which marketing efforts lead to sales, open the marketing reports, including Sales attributed to marketing and Sessions attributed to marketing campaigns, which count traffic from UTM campaigns and marketing apps.
Find both sets of reports under Analytics > Reports by filtering the Category to Acquisition or Marketing. The campaign attribution report on the Growth page also shows customer acquisition cost (CAC), which is the total spent on advertising and sales divided by the first-time customers attributed to a campaign.
In the Shopify Survey of Store Owners, Q4 2025,* 30% of stores with $1 million or more in revenue said they track CAC, compared with 5% of lower-revenue stores.
Google Analytics shows how visitors interact with your site and which channels they arrive from, such as email, social platforms, referrals, paid search, and organic search, according to Google’s guide to using Search Console and Google Analytics.
Click-through rate (CTR) for Google Search results is a Search Console metric, calculated as clicks divided by impressions. To view it in Google Analytics, link your Search Console property. Google Analytics then shows a set of Search Console reports, including the queries and landing pages that brought organic search traffic.
How much does website promotion cost?
Website promotion costs depend on the tactics you choose. Several tactics in this guide use free tools, while paid advertising and outside marketing help add direct costs.
Free tactics
Free options covered in this guide include:
- Google Business Profile
- Bing Places for Business
- Google Search Console
- Shopify Forms
- The built-in Shopify blog
- Google Shopping tab listings for eligible US stores
Shopify Messaging also includes 10,000 free emails each month on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans.
Paid advertising
Intuit’s 2025 Small Business Advertising Trends Report, produced by its ad-sales division, SMB MediaLabs, compared advertising budgets by revenue. Small businesses with less than $500,000 in annual revenue put 28% of their marketing budget into advertising, compared with 45% for businesses with more than $2.5 million.
In the Shopify Survey of Store Owners, Q4 2025,* 31% of stores with $1 million or more in revenue named paid advertising as their most effective growth strategy.
Creator partnerships through Shopify Collabs cost the commission you set on each sale, plus a 2.9% processing fee on each commission payment.
Hired marketing help
The median annual wage for market research analysts and marketing specialists was $78,760, or $37.87 per hour, in May 2025, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
To hire a freelancer or agency instead, browse the Shopify Partner Directory. It’s a curated list of Shopify Partners where you can explore their services, including marketing and sales, and contact them directly.
*Based on a November 2025 survey of 500 Shopify merchants conducted in English across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United States. Respondents were established merchants with two or more years on the platform. Results reflect the experiences of this specific sample and may not be representative of all merchants.
Website promotion FAQ
How can I promote my website?
Promote your website with tactics from four groups: search and content; social, community, and email; listings, outreach, and events; and paid promotion.
For a new store, start with free search tasks like adding homepage metadata. Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit the sitemap Shopify generates for you. Then add other channels as your time and budget allow.
How do you promote a website for free?
Promote your website for free with tactics that cost time instead of money. Publish posts on your store’s built-in blog, improve your pages for search, list your store in free business directories, and write guest posts for other sites without trading content for links. Stores that meet Google’s in-person requirements are also eligible for a free Google Business Profile.
Why is it important to promote my website?
Promotion creates the paths new shoppers use to find your store. Shopify’s reports sort visits by how shoppers arrive: directly, from search, or through a referral.
A direct visit means someone typed your web address, so they already knew it. New visitors reach you through search listings, social posts, emails, ads, and links on other sites.
How much do website promotion services cost?
Website promotion services cost different amounts, since each freelancer or agency sets its own rates based on the work involved, which can include SEO, search engine advertising, social media marketing, or email marketing. For in-house marketing help, the median annual wage in May 2025 for market research analysts and marketing specialists was $78,760, or $37.87 per hour, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its wage data exclude self-employed workers.
How do you promote a new website?
Promote a new website by starting with search and email. Target low-volume, low-difficulty keywords first, which Shopify’s keyword guide says is a good place for newer brands to begin. Expect search engines to take 48 to 72 hours to index new pages.
