Developing a business mindset is an essential part of being an entrepreneur—an endeavor that’s demanding, but for most founders, worth it. Some 95% of founders say building their business is one of their proudest accomplishments, and most say they’d do it again, according to a 2026 survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Shopify.

How to cultivate a business mindset
- Set clear goals
- Eliminate negative self-talk
- Continually learn
- Be adaptable
- Build a network
- Face your fears
- Grow from failure
- Look toward the future
Anyone can develop a stronger business mindset with these strategies:
Set clear goals
To successfully be your own boss, clarify your intentions and set clear business goals for yourself and your company.
“It's important to be clear on your targets. We know exactly what revenue we want to achieve by the end of the year. We know the profitability we want to maintain, and we work towards that every single day,” says founder of umbrella brand Original DuckheadMorgan Cros on Shopify Masters. “If you know where you want to go, it's much easier to get there.”
Breaking down big goals into actionable steps makes them feel more manageable on a daily basis. You can use the SMART goals framework to lay out your targets.
SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Evaluate each target against these criteria to ensure they’re realistic goals, worth working toward, and you can measure the outcome of your efforts to become an entrepreneur.
Eliminate negative self-talk
Don’t get hung up on small mistakes, and don’t beat yourself up when things don’t go your way.
“I’m constantly battling mistakes and failures, but it’s just part of the process,” says Nick Bare, CEO of Bare Performance Nutrition. “It’s part of the journey. Most things aren’t the end of the world.”
This positive mindset and big-picture thinking helped Nick build a business valued at more than $60 million and a robust following on social media platforms like YouTube, where he has more than 1.5 million subscribers.
Continually learn
Honing a business mindset means being open to learning at every stage, from the fledgling startup days to your first big business success. Online courses, business mentors, industry newsletters, hands-on experimentation, and entrepreneur books can help build your skills and knowledge.
“The most fun part of having a business is just the excuse for all the things you get to learn,” says Canyon Coffee Cofounder Casey Wojtalewicz on Shopify Masters.
“One thing that we were always inspired by, that we learned from other founders or from reading business books, is that almost everyone doesn't know anything when they start, and yet look at what people go on to build. So that's still our mindset.”
Be adaptable
Running a business can be turbulent. By building a resilient business mindset, tapping into your creativity, and focusing on solutions rather than setbacks, you’ll be able to make decisions and solve problems under pressure.
Take Leah Marcus and Yasaman Bakhtiar, the founders of pickle brand Good Girl Snacks. Instead of letting an early setback derail their fledgling company, Yasaman and Leah turned a big problem into an opportunity.
“We were pretty much ready to launch in December, which was the initial goal, except we had a bit of a mishap, which we call ‘cucumbergate.’ A bunch of our cucumbers were actually put in the wrong truck and they were frozen,” says Yasaman on Shopify Masters.
“Because of that, we had to postpone our production to January, which actually ended up working in our favor because it gave us more time to prepare,” Yasaman says. “We were really able to beef up our strategy and have it down.”
Build a network
You can learn about cultivating a healthy business mindset from successful entrepreneurs who’ve come before you. Networking with other people in your industry can also present you with more opportunities down the road.
“One thing we always tell people, whether you're starting a business or you just have the idea and you don't really know where to start, is to cold outreach people in the industry through LinkedIn, or just get connected with people who’ve worked in the industry through people that you know,” says Leah.
The people Leah and Yasaman met in the early days of Good Girl Snacks gave them the entrepreneurship confidence they needed to launch their business. They also connected the cofounders with consultants who helped them build their brand later on.
“The best way to do it is just to talk to as many people as you can in the industry, whether that's for advice, connections, or anything else,” Leah says. “It's the first step we took and the one we tell people to take.”
Face your fears
Starting your own venture involves business risk. Repeatedly taking the plunge helps you develop resiliency and a strong business mindset.
“Every single time I have done something scary, I am just more willing to do the next thing that's scary,” says Ellen Bennett, founder of kitchen brand Hedley & Bennett, on Shopify Masters. “It's served me because I sort of fail forward when things go wrong. I'm like, ‘Ok, that happened. Now how am I going to get out of this and get to the next place?”
If risk taking is keeping you from getting started with your business idea, know that Shopify’s 2026 survey with the Harris Poll shows that up to 57% of founders who waited before launching say they wish they'd started sooner, not that they'd been better prepared.
Grow from failure
A growth mindset helps you overcome failure, recognizing it as a stepping stone to growth. In fact, the lessons you learn will help you build your next company.
A survey conducted by Shopify and The Harris Poll found merchants who previously launched a business on Shopify and returned to build a second one earn more than twice the sales per shop on average, versus first-time founders.
Take Jaz Fenton and Jamil Bhuya. Before launching the design agency Otherhalf Studio, Jaz and Jamil started the skincare line Yellow Beauty. That business didn’t work out, but Jaz and Jamil took what they learned and applied it to their next venture.
“When I'm thinking about a new [business], I really want to make sure that I'm really being careful of learning from those past mistakes and lessons—what didn't work out and why it didn't work out, and how I want to be intentional with the new thing that I'm doing so that I don't repeat those mistakes,” says Jaz.
Look toward the future
Keeping one eye toward the future helps you focus on progress and innovation. Monitoring new trends and technologies, business world news, shifts in customer behavior, actions from competitors, and potential supply chain disruptions help prep you for your business’s next stage or the ecommerce challenge around the corner.
Take grocery delivery service Odd Bunch. The Canada-based business uses a subscription model to sell produce boxes with a preselected assortment of fruits and vegetables. The company’s first iteration, Food Fund, allowed shoppers to fully customize their produce boxes.
“We thought Food Fund was sort of the ironclad business model in this industry, and clearly it wasn't,” says Odd Bunch Founder Divy Ojha on Shopify Masters.
“This time, we're going to try to be more proactive and try to see around corners. That's kind of your job as senior personnel in any company: to try and work three to six months in the future and make sure that the ship is sailing in the right direction.”
